Equistar sued over alleged Channelview pollution
The Houston Business Journal reports that a lawsuit by Harris County claims Equistar Chemicals LP, a subsidiary of LyondellBasell Industries, caused illegal pollution in Channelview in December:
Harris County Attorney Vince Ryan's office filed the suit Tuesday against Equistar alleging that the company's plant ... in Channelview illegally polluted the air when an improperly installed gasket failed last December.
According to Ryan, the gasket's failure led to the release of nearly 450 pounds of 1, 3 butadiene and 725.8 pounds of butenes.
Harris County is seeking an injunction against Equistar, ordering the chemical company to halt future illegal releases. The county is also going after a civil penalty, attorney's fees and court costs.
The paper says Equistar declined to comment.
