Memorial football holding golf tourney

The Pasadena Memorial football program is inviting local golfers to its fourth annual Maverick Football Golf Classic on July 30 at Bay Forest Golf Course in La Porte.
The format is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
It's our main booster club fund raiser, so that's where our booster club gets most of its financial backing," Memorial coach John Snelson said.
It's our fourth annual event and it's just a way to kick off the football season. It's really the last relaxation for the coaches. We get out there and play and the community really comes out and supports us."
Snelson says he's not very good, averaging somewhere in the mid-90s on the rare occasions he takes to the course, but as a head football coach he is good at putting together a team and coming up with a plan.
I putt pretty well so I find three guys who can knock it a long way, get it close to the pin, and then I try to put it in the hole," Snelson said.
That strategy worked in the Classic's second year, when Snelson, Sam Rayburn coach Chris Bussey and two locals teamed up to win it. Last year, outside linebackers coach Tim Martin was on the winning team.
The entry fee is $55 per person or $220 per team. All proceeds go to the Mavericks football team and supplement the program's budget for equipment and other expenses.
The event also includes a closest-to-the-hole contest and longest-drive contest, a silent auction and giveaways. Tournament officials also are accepting hole sponsors for $100.
