Master Gardeners plant sale, discussion scheduled for October

Two Galveston County Master Gardeners programs are taking place in the month of October.

The Galveston County Master Gardeners Annual Ornamental and Perennial Plant Sale will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6. The sale offers a number of plants that are suitable for the environment of Galveston County, including heart-tolerant perennials, shade plants, tropical varieties and gingers. There will be plants available for butterfly and hummingbird gardens, as well as harder-to-find selections. The sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot next to the Wayne Johnson Community Center in Carbide Park, located at 4102 Main St. in La Marque.

A discussion titled "Shade Trees in the Home Landscape: Selection, Planting and Care" will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27. Heather McKnight, arborist for the city of League City, will answer a number of commonly asked questions, such as what trees do best in the area, how close trees should be planted to a house and what pruning procedures are necessary in the city. McKnight will also discuss landscaping issues of concern, Water Smart trees, mulching and drought stress. The discussion will be held from 9-11 a.m. at the Galveston Country AgriLife Extension Office in Carbide Park, located at 4102 Main St. in La Marque.
