Rayburn football holds on for 30-27 victory over Porter Aug. 30
Latrone Williams and the Sam Rayburn High School Texans jumped out to a 16-0 second-quarter lead and held on for a 30-27 victory over the New Caney Porter High School Spartans Aug. 30 at Veteran's Memorial Stadium in Pasadena.
Williams lead a three-back attack that racked up 283 total yards, rushing 16 times for 101 yards with first- and third-quarter touchdown runs. Teammates Chris Jaime added 77 yards and a second-quarter score, and Francisco Jimenez ran for 65 yards and the Texans final score of the game with just under six minutes to play.
Porter's Marlon Lewis rushing seven times for 71 yards and the Spartans first touchdown of the season early in the second quarter. Quarterback Delvin Isadore added 18 yards and an early third-quarter score, while Colton Clark picked up 22 yards and the game's final touchdown to pull Porter within three points with 2:25 left to play.
Isodore passed for 172 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown, a 31-yard strike to Ervin Portillo late in the third quarter to pull Porter within 23-20. Portillo finished with four catches for 59 yards.
Rayburn had plenty of ball-handling issues throughout, fumbling nine times but losing possession on just three. Porter fumbled twice but only lost one. Each team committed 50 yards worth of penalties and punted three times.
Porter travels to Conroe to visit Caney Creek High School at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, and opens District 19 play at King High School in Houston at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, before hosting Kingwood Park in another District 19 game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
Rayburn travels to Lee High School in Baytown for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday, Sept. 7, before its open date the weekend of Sept. 14, and hosting Northbrook High School at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21.
