Pasadena Multipurpose Recreation Center to offer adaptive swimming lessons

The Pasadena Multipurpose Recreation Center is offering swimming lessons at varying skill levels through August.

Students must be at least 7 years old and be a registered participant of the center with a completed assessment on file. They must be independent in their personal care and have the ability to follow two-step commands. Any participant that becomes a hazard, either to themselves or others, will be asked to leave. Classes cost $10 for residents and $15 for nonresidents.

Students taking Swim I will get an introduction to the water. They will blow bubbles, get their heads wet and kick from the side of the pool to help familiarize themselves. Prior swim experience is unnecessary for this course, and exceptions may be made for students less independent in their personal care.

Session II of the Swim I course will run from Aug. 13 through Aug. 16, and Session III will run from Aug. 20 through Aug. 23. There are three 45-minute time slots to choose from for each session: 9-9:45 a.m., 10-10:45 a.m. or 11-11:45 a.m. Students will receive an award upon completing the course.

The Swim II class is for swimmers comfortable in the water and getting in and out of the pool. In this course, students will learn different strokes and floating styles while focusing on basic water skills. Swim I is a prerequisite for this class.

Session II of the Swim II class is scheduled to take place Aug. 13 through Aug. 26. Available class times include 1-1:45 p.m., 2-2:45 p.m. and 3-3:45 p.m. A celebratory trip to Strawberry Pool will be taken at the end of the course.

Swim III is designed to challenge swimmers who are independent in the water. Students will improve their skills by working on diving, treading water and learning advanced swim strokes. The class will take frequent trips to Strawberry Park. Participants must have completed Swim II.

Session I of Swim III will take place Aug. 13 through Aug. 16, and Session II is scheduled for Aug. 20 through Aug. 23. Class times will be based on students' swim tests.
