Flamenco dancer Edith Niño will be among the performers for the 2012 Houston Spanish and Flamenco Festival.

The second annual Houston Spanish and Flamenco Festival will be presented this week by San Jacinto College, the Consulate General of Spain and Solero Flamenco.

The festival will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 23 and run through Saturday, May 26 in the Marie Spence Flickinger Fine Arts Center, 13735 Beamer Road.

Salvadora Galan will open the festival's concert series on Thursday; Flamenco will present a performance featuring flamenco dancer Maestro Teo Morca on Friday; and Saturday will feature flamenco artists of the Omayra Amaya Flamenco Company.

The festival will also feature youth programs; pre-performance humanities presentations; workshops for all levels in flamenco; and interactive performances and demonstrations for local elementary, junior high and high school students.

Workshops begin May 24 and are free for SJC students and faculty. Participants will learn about flamenco through dance, song, guitar and percussion.

Audiences can also attend historical lectures on the roots of flamenco, celebrated performers and the art form itself before evening performances.
