YES Prep Southeast senior awarded blood center scholarship
YES Prep Southeast senior Luis Carbajal was recently selected as a recipient of the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Centers Power of Life Creative Scholarship.
Carbajal is one of the 11 students selected to receive $2,000 for their college education from The Blood Center.
The Blood Centers Power of Life Creative Scholarship encouraged students to use their imaginations to create a project that would educate and inspire individuals to “Commit for Life.” Submissions included essays, blog entries, videos, websites, songs and more.
Carbajal, who plans to attend either Cornell University or Rice University to study chemical engineering, submitted an essay entitled “A Given Chance.” He wrote about his desire to give blood as a teen, 12 years following his own cancer diagnosis and remission.
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center offers scholarships to high school students each year. To be eligible, a student’s school must host at least two blood drives with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center during the school year.
For more information on scholarships and other high school blood drive benefits, visit www.giveblood.org/scholarship.
